4 Descriptions of charitable purposes

The Charities Act 2011 Section 3(1) sets out the 13 ‘descriptions of purposes’ which are charitable:

  1. 4.1

        the prevention or relief of poverty1;

  2. 4.2

        the advancement of education2;

  3. 4.3

        the advancement of religion3;

  4. 4.4

        the advancement of health or the saving of lives4;

  5. 4.5

        the advancement of citizenship or community development5;

  6. 4.6

        the advancement of the arts, culture, heritage or science6;

  7. 4.7

        the advancement of amateur sport7;

  8. 4.8

        the advancement of human rights, conflict resolution or reconciliation or the promotion of religious or racial harmony or equality and diversity8
