143 Charitable purpose

In those cases where, instead of or in addition to naming a particular institution, the testator wishes to devote the gift to charitable purposes generally1, or to specify the charitable purpose for which his gift is to be applied, it is necessary to ensure that the words used prescribe a purpose which is exclusively charitable according to English law2. There is no comprehensive statutory definition of ‘charity’3.
