4.7 Approach of the courts on applications for permission to change a child’s name

In the case of any dispute between persons having parental responsibility for a child (and even between parents where one parent does not have parental responsibility1), the permission of the court has to be sought for a change of name of the child. In deciding whether to grant permission, the court will be concerned with the welfare of the child and will not make an order unless there is some evidence that the making of the order would lead to some improvement in the child’s welfare2.
