4.2 Legitimation, alteration of name within 12 months of birth and adoption

Where any person whose birth has been registered in England or Wales has become a legitimated person, the parents of that person must, within three months of the marriage or formation of the civil partnership by which that person was legitimated, provide information to the Registrar General with a view to obtaining the re-registration of the birth of that person1. The Registrar General may authorise at any time the re-registration of the child’s birth2. A birth may also be re-registered following a declaration of parentage3.
