3 Methods of assuming a new name

3.1 General

A person is entitled to assume a new name without any particular formality, but it is common for the assumption of a new name to be evidenced formally by the enrolment of a deed poll1. A person may also effect a change of name by Act of Parliament2 or by royal licence3, but these methods are very rare nowadays.
