9.3 Licensed taxis

Taxis are technically referred to as hackney carriages. Taxis and taxi drivers operating in the metropolitan police district and the City of London are licensed by Transport for London1. Taxis and taxi drivers operating elsewhere are licensed by local authorities2. A licensed taxi may ply for hire at designated taxi ranks or by picking up passengers in the streets within the local authority area where it is licensed. A taxi may also be hired in advance3. Licensed taxis are ordinarily hired as a whole, but may in certain circumstances be hired
