7 Registration of burials and cremations

All burials are required to be registered, and this includes not only burials in churchyards, burial grounds, cemeteries, and trust deed burial places, but also, it seems, any burial in private ground1. Searches may be made in burial registers and certified copies obtained subject to payment of the appropriate fees2.

After a cremation has taken place, the registrar of the crematorium must enter particulars in the register of cremations, and must also send a notification to the registrar of deaths in which the death took place (or, if outside England
