18 General provisions

Statutes dealing with the provision of churchyards, burial grounds and cemeteries fall into two categories which to some extent overlap, namely those enabling land to be conveyed, for example by limited owners or corporations, and those empowering the appropriate bodies to buy and hold land. Many of the statutory provisions were designed to overcome mortmain provisions which have been wholly repealed by the Charities Act 19601, whereas others are not confined simply to the provision of a burial place but extend also to the provision of places of worship2.
