28 Restrictions on business names

Under the Building Societies Act 1986 as originally enacted a building society was prohibited from using any name other than its registered name and breach of the obligation was a criminal offence1. Following the changes introduced by the Building Societies Act 1997 a building society may now carry on business under whatever name it chooses, subject however to the following limitations. A building society may not, without the written approval of the Financial Services Authority (FSA), carry on business under a name which is likely to give the impression of a connection with the Government
