The Building Societies Act 1986 specifies circumstances in which a society’s registration must, or may, be cancelled by the Financial Services Authority (FSA)1. Any cancellation of the registration of a building society must be effected in writing signed by the FSA2. Where a society’s registration is cancelled, then, subject to its right of appeal3, it ceases to be a society incorporated under the Building Societies Act 1986 and accordingly ceases to be a building society within the statutory meaning4, but without prejudice to any liability actually
