11.1 Introduction

Contracts often include provisions concerned with periods of time, such as the period of time within which a person must carry out an act, or which has to elapse before something must occur. For example:

‘X shall within 3 months of 11 May 2001 pay to Y the sum of ...’

or

‘payment shall be made within 30 days of the date of the agreement’

or

‘a party may terminate the agreement at any time
