97.1 Ethical and other guidelines

The conduct of museum loans, in common with much museum activity in general, is subject not only to law but to an extensive body of ethical principle and professional guidance1. The codes that prescribe such guidance can be general, governing loans alongside other transactions such as sale and purchase, or they can be specific to loans. While normally having no direct legal effect, such guidance may have indirect legal effect: for example, by defining professional standards in a legal claim, or leading to professional sanctions when disregarded.
