72 Various causes of action

Actions under bailments may, according to circumstances, be brought in contract, tort or bailment1. Bailment is a transaction sui generis and gives rise to an independent action for breach2. While precise measurement of damages depends on the cause of action, the several causes of action open to parties to bailments have much in common with one another, and will often yield similar results. The main point of convergence is that damages, however awarded, are normally compensatory3.
