194 International instruments—unlawfully removed cultural objects

The United Kingdom is party to three principal international instruments that govern the treatment of unlawfully removed cultural objects. These are:

  1. 194.1

        the European Directive on the return of cultural objects unlawfully removed from the territory of a member state1;

  2. 194.2

        the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property2; and

  3. 194.3

        the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict3 and
