131 The purpose of the Government Indemnity Scheme

Provision for the Government Indemnity Scheme (‘GIS’) is made by the National Heritage Act 1980 Section 161. The scheme exists for the benefit of the United Kingdom public and enhances and widens access to objects of a scientific, technological, artistic or historic nature by facilitating loans to museums, galleries, libraries and other bodies2. The scheme provides the Secretary of State3 with the power to give undertakings to lenders in respect of any loss or damage which might be caused to objects
