3 Vivisection and scientific procedures

The law relating to vivisection is largely contained in the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, which introduced a system of personal and project licences1 to be granted by the Home Secretary in connection with any experimental or scientific procedure (a ‘regulated’ procedure) applied to a protected animal2 which may have the effect of causing that animal pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm3.
