1 Prevention of cruelty generally

A number of statutes seek to prevent cruelty and suffering to animals by creating criminal offences. The principal statute is the Animal Welfare Act 20061, which creates two general offences2 against protected animals3: that of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal4 and failing to take such steps as are reasonable in all the circumstances to ensure that the needs of a protected animal for which he is responsible are met to the extent required by good practice5.
