(a) Introduction to acquisition of land for allotments

33 Principal methods of acquiring land for allotments

The necessary land for allotments may be acquired1 by a local authority in the following ways:

  1. 33.1

        by hiring or purchase by agreement;

  2. 33.2

        by compulsory hiring by a county council on behalf of a parish council;

  3. 33.3

        by compulsory purchase; or

  4. 33.4

        by the appropriation of land held for other purposes.

In addition, district councils may enter on unoccupied land for the purpose of providing allotment gardens.
