Where the arable land of a holding covers more than 15 hectares, the farmer must ensure that an area corresponding to at least 5% of the arable land is designated as an EFA, unless an exemption applies. The 5% requirement will be reviewed in 2017 and could increase to 7%2.

Member States were delegated power to select land uses and features that would count as EFAs from a specified list3. England and Wales have made different selections4.
