418 Agricultural operations affecting ancient monuments

Ancient monuments enjoy statutory protection if they are included within the schedule maintained by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 19791. These are called ‘scheduled monuments’.

It is a criminal offence to carry out any works which might interfere with a scheduled monument without prior approval of the Secretary of State granted in the form of Scheduled Monument Consent or by development consent2.
