414.2 The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)

In March 2012, the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) was brought into effect. The NPPF, as the name suggests, is of national application, and replaced Planning Policy Guidance Notes (PPGs) and Planning Policy Statements (PPSs) as well as a good number of Letters to Chief Planning Officers, and Minerals Planning Guidance notes1. The NPPF sought to regear the planning system to be more positive2. Fundamental to the NPPF is the presumption in favour of sustainable development3. This provides that, for decision making, development proposals that accord with the development plan should be approved
