3 Environmental protection schemes

Up until 2005 there was a clear distinction between subsidy schemes which were designed to control production and those which were intended to encourage protection and enhancement of the environment. Following the introduction of the Single Payment Scheme in 2005, however, the focus of the direct payment schemes changed; payments were no longer linked to production, but instead were linked to compliance with a wide variety of obligations designed to protect the environment and ensure good farming practice. That new focus has been strengthened in the new Basic Payment Scheme through its greening rules.
