257 Eligibility

To participate in the Entry level Environmental Stewardship (ELS) scheme both the applicant and the land had to be eligible. Provided those criteria were satisfied and the applicant submitted an application, a map and a farm environmental record1, the applicant was automatically accepted into the scheme.

The ELS scheme was open to landowners, tenants, licensees2 and holders of common land rights, as long as they had management control of the land in the scheme for the term of the agreement.

As ELS is a whole-farm scheme an application had to include all the eligible farmed land managed by the applicant
