256 Entry Level Environmental Stewardship

Entry level Environmental Stewardship (ELS) is the simplest level of commitment and was open to all farmers who wished to receive an additional area based payment in return for providing environmental benefits1. To ‘earn’ the payment farmers are obliged to commit to managing their land in accordance with options taken from a standard menu. The options cover such matters as hedgerow management, the protection of trees in fields, the protection of archaeological features, the creation of buffer strips and wide uncultivated margins, the creation of skylark nesting areas
