255 Introduction

The Environmental Stewardship Scheme was introduced in England in 2005 at the same time as the Single Payment Scheme1. It is a voluntary scheme providing additional payments to farmers in return for environmental benefits. Existing Environmental Stewardship agreements continue to run their course, but will be replaced as they expire by new agreements under Countryside Stewardship, if the farmer wishes to apply under that scheme and is successful in his application.

Environmental Stewardship is arranged into three levels2:
