233 Higher-tier agreements

Higher-tier agreements are broadly similar to the previous Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) under the Environmental Stewardship Scheme. They are for the most environmentally significant sites and woodlands (eg SSSIs), which will usually need complex management and one-to-one advice and support from Natural England or Forestry Commission advisers.

There are separate applications and procedures for applying for a Higher-tier agreement depending on whether the area comprises woodland only. Non-woodland only applicants start by completing an expression of interest form, in which applicants can select from the full range of the 244 scheme options and capital grants available.
