222 Access agreements

222.1 General

There are various schemes under which landowners and farmers provide public access to areas of land in return for payments. These are operated by government departments, statutory agencies and local authorities1. Informal arrangements can also be made without payment.

Access agreements may specify restrictions on public use, for example access may be limited to foot only, entry may be via certain access points, dogs must be kept on leads or camping is prohibited. Access may be suspended temporarily, for example to reduce the risk of fire
