21 Overview1

For many years, agriculture in the United Kingdom has been supported and regulated by the European Union through the Common Agricultural Policy. Measures have included a system of dairy quota, which was designed to address the problem of surpluses of milk and milk products within the community. This was introduced in 1984 and had a profound effect both on dairy farming and also on agricultural transactions involving dairy farms. Milk quotas continued to operate until 31 March 2015, when they were abolished.
