187 Abandoned vehicles

Powers are available for local authorities to deal with abandoned vehicles under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978. Abandonment of a vehicle in the open air is an offence committed by the person responsible for the abandonment1. The local authority is under a duty to remove vehicles which it believes to have been abandoned, and the cost of doing so is recoverable from the person responsible (and also from the owner of the vehicle, if different, unless he can establish that he was not aware of the abandonment)2.
