183.4 Action by a local authority

A person in possession of land who allows an unauthorised travellers’ encampment on his land may be served with an enforcement notice by the local planning authority on the ground that there has been an unauthorised material change of use of the land. Failure to comply with the enforcement notice may lead to prosecution1.

A person in possession of land may be able to persuade his local authority to take action to evict trespassers who are camped either on his land or on ‘abandoned’ land. If it appears to a local authority
