113 General

The principal system for protecting land of high nature conservation value in England and Wales is designation as a site of special scientific interest under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Responsibility for designating and thereafter policing sites of special scientific interest falls upon Natural England and the Natural Resources Body for Wales1.
