Foul and surface water drainage to private tanks and outfall systems need to be investigated, not only to check their location and the existence of rights to use and maintain them, but also because such usage may lead to liability under environmental legislation. Buyers of properties which have drains into a septic tank, small sewage treatment plant or cesspool need to investigate whether a permit is required and has been obtained by the relevant party. The disposal of slurry and other effluent from the business of farming is of particular concern1.
