302 Purpose of the Rent (Agriculture) Act 1976

The Rent (Agriculture) Act 19761 was the first statutory attempt to extend security of tenure to agricultural workers housed by their employers. Prior to the passing of the Rent (Agriculture) Act 1976, agricultural employees housed by their employers had only very limited security of tenure2 and in most cases no protection with regard to the control of rent levels3. The Rent (Agriculture) Act 1976 was an attempt to compromise between two political objectives:

        to abolish the concept of a ‘tied cottage’ occupancy and to replace it
