1 Background to agricultural tenancies

The Agricultural Tenancies Act 1995 came into effect on 1 September 1995 and introduced an entirely new form of agricultural tenancy known as the ‘farm business tenancy’. Prior to that date, for several decades, lettings of agricultural holdings had, in general, been governed by the agricultural holdings regime, which afforded considerable security of tenure to tenants and prescribed many terms of the lettings by statute.
