5 The Advertising Standards Authority

The Advertising Standards Authority (‘ASA’) is a non-profit-making limited company which is independent of the advertising business and governed by a council whose members are appointed by the chairman and sit as individuals. It shares a joint executive with the Committee of Advertising Practice (‘CAP’) but is separate from the CAP and operates independently from it. The key tasks of the ASA are to deal with complaints from both the public and industry about the content of advertisements; to maintain and promote proper standards of advertising; to identify and address problems through its own research;
