4 The Committee of Advertising Practice

The membership of the Committee of Advertising Practice (‘CAP’) is composed of representatives from various professional and trade associations with substantial advertising interests1. The CAP’s role is to ensure compliance with the British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (‘CAP Code’). It devises, reviews and amends the Code; operates certain mandatory pre-vetting procedures; offers a pre-publication advice service to advertisers, agencies and the media; co-ordinates sanctions; and produces information notes and alerts for the industry2.
