The availability of legal aid remains uneven across England and Wales. The LexisNexis Legal Aid Deserts 2026 report examines where legal need appears high relative to local legal aid provider capacity, helping to identify areas where access to support may be under greatest pressure.

Using public data, the research compares indicators of legal need with legal aid provider capacity across 318 local authorities in England and Wales. The analysis covers five areas of law: housing, family, crime, immigration and employment.

Join the report’s authors as they explain the research methodology, discuss the key results and consider what the data tells us about access to legal aid across England and Wales.
