40 million people are estimated to be trapped in modern slavery worldwide:

  1. 1 in 4 of them are children.
  2. Almost three quarters (71%) are women and girls.
  3. Over 10,000 were identified as potential victims by the authorities in the UK in 2019.

COVID-19 has had a profound impact on modern slavery.

In the UK, as we grapple with the pandemic, the ‘hostile environment’ policy is compounding the vulnerability of people trapped in modern slavery. Many are too scared to reach out to authorities, even when they are in dire need of accessing essential support, such as healthcare. They fear being criminalised and detained, rather than being protected as a victim of crime. People in slavery are often forced to live in squalid, overcrowded conditions without access to good washing facilities. In these conditions, not only can coronavirus spread rapidly, without medical help, it presents a mortal threat. Source antislavery.org

In this session we focus on Modern Slavery and discuss the role of General Counsel in fighting it. This is not only a moral obligation it is a regulatory obligation.
