Join us for the launch of Aspire in the north of England - 24 May 2018

LexisNexis, the C&I Yorkshire and the Law Society Leeds JLD have joined forces to launch Aspire - a new, free networking and professional development forum for junior lawyers from paralegals through to solicitors of 5 years’ PQE from across the north of England.

Unique in its approach to help in-house lawyers succeed from day one, the forum aims to provide legal and soft skills training alongside an opportunity to network, compare notes and swap stories with others embarking on their in-house legal careers.

Speakers for the launch event include:

- Simon Tingle, regulatory lawyer, Pinsent Masons will provide an update on privilege

- Sophie Gould, Head of In-house, LexisNexis providing best practice and practical tips on personal development planning

- Mark Amsden, Company Secretary, Yorkshire Water (previous GC Morrisons) sharing his personal experiences in-house, including top career tips to accelerate your career and what senior in-house lawyers look for when recruiting junior team members

Networking drinks will also be available after the session from 7 PM.

Why join?
There are benefits for attendees and the teams and organisations they support.

By encouraging junior team members to join Aspire, a team and organisation will see benefits through the improvement of both legal skills and commercial acumen, and the soft skills applied in day-to-day interactions with commercial colleagues.

Further, organisations can be assured that those starting out their legal career receive quality training and development support, get encouragement from like-minded peers in similar environments and hear insight and best practice from senior commercial and in-house experts to support their career progression.

Attendees similarly benefit.

Through a structured and tailored training approach, the forum helps those starting out in their career in-house to stand out and succeed in their role.

From the ability to build on their network of peers to share ideas and experience with to gaining insight and best practice guidance from expert speakers across legal, commercial and personal development topics.  All sessions will also contribute to the new SRA competency requirements.

What's more, there is also a focus on personal development and well-being to encourage a focus on career development.

Testimonials from members in the South

We are very excited to launch Aspire in the North. It is already an established and successful networking forum for in-house lawyers starting out in their careers in London. See below for what members are saying:

“In our experience, the long-term confidence and knowledge that trainees gain from the Aspire events hugely outweighs the short-term cost of a few hours out of the office. And you never know when the contacts they make through the network might prove useful for business purposes! We would certainly recommend Aspire and we support our trainee’s attendance at these events.”
Claire Woolley, Head of Corporate Legal, RAC

“Aspire is a great programme for in-house legal trainees, providing not only helpful training but also an instant network for in-house trainees who do not benefit from the grand scale trainee networks that a law firm would provide. Our legal trainee thoroughly enjoys the sessions and finds meeting other in-house trainees really helpful and fun.”
Maaike de Bie, General Counsel, Royal Mail plc

“Joining this group has been a great opportunity to sharpen my legal knowledge and commercial soft skills, allowing me to feel more confident in my role.” Aspire member

“Sharing best practice and discussing challenges with others at the same stage of their career has been invaluable.” Aspire member
