Vulnerable children to be removed from shielded patient list amid coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Department of Health and Social Care has announced that the majority of children currently considered as clinically extremely vulnerable to coronavirus (COVID-19) will be removed from the shielded patient list. Evidence from paediatric clinicians shows that coronavirus poses a low risk to children and young people and therefore only a small group of children with specific medical conditions will likely be advised to shield if shielding is reintroduced again. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has worked alongside specialists to determine who needs to carry on shielding and continues to provide advice and guidance on who is clinically extremely vulnerable.
