The Department of Health and Social Care has published NHS Workforce Statistics from the end of September 2020 which show there are currently a record number of professionally qualified clinical staff working in the NHS amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The number of nurses has increased by 13,313 (up to 299,184), and the number of doctors has now hit 122,446 (up by 6,030 from last year). At the junior end, acceptances to nursing and midwifery courses in England increased by 26% and the number of GPs starting training surpassed the government’s target by more than 15%.
