Message from Lord Chief Justice amid new coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Burnett of Maldon, has published a message in light of the latest coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions. Lord Burnett confirms that courts and tribunals should continue to operate and court attendance in person is permitted, including for jurors, witnesses and other professionals recognised as key workers.

Lord Burnett offers reassurance that Her Majesty's Courts and Tribunals Service will ‘continue to put in place precautionary measures’ in accordance with government guidance. Those attending court should adhere to government guidance including social distancing, hand washing and wearing masks.

Additionally, Lord Burnett praises the ability of the courts and tribunals to ‘uphold the rule of law and sustain the administration of justice since March’ 2020. Lord Burnett also emphasises that the facilitation of remote hearings for some or all involved should be conducted in all proceedings.
