Mayor of London urges government to prepare for winter amid coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has urged the Housing Minister, Robert Jenrick, to act in order to ensure that the work to protect homeless people in London during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic does not go to waste. Khan highlights the need to ‘prepare for winter’ and a possible second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The economic consequences of the lockdown during the pandemic are likely to lead to an increase of homelessness in London, which has led Khan to call for the government to 'stem the flow of people losing their homes by offering greater protection to private renters'. He has also reiterated his call ‘for far more to be done to help non-UK nationals, including people with no recourse to public funds, who find their options to escape homelessness hopelessly limited’.
