Lord Chancellor confirms the resumption of jury trials amid coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Lord Chancellor has revealed that jury trials are to be gradually reintroduced following their temporary suspension due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. In a statement published on 11 May 2020, the Lord Chancellor explained that the courts are now in a position, with approval from Public Health England and Public Health Wales, to take some first steps towards the resumption of jury trials. The current plan is for a limited number of trials to take place, conducted safely and observing social distancing rules, at courts including the Old Bailey in London and at Cardiff Crown Court. The success of these trials will inform how others are to be conducted more widely as the coronavirus situation develops.
