HMCTS releases data set on court workload during coronavirus (COVID-19)

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has published a statistical data set containing information on weekly management information used to understand ‘workload volumes and timeliness’ nationally during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, between March 2020 and May 2020. The tables in the publication document the impact on workload volumes and activity across the court and tribunal system, including in magistrates’ courts, civil courts, crown courts, family courts and various tribunals. HMCTS states that, as the figures reflect data held on the relevant case management systems, they therefore have some definitional and timing differences from the official statistics.

HMCTS affirms that revisions to monthly figures are generally small and do not usually change the overall picture of performance, but warns that more recent weekly figures are subject to larger revision and should be treated as provisional.

HMCTS advises users to use the official statistics for most purposes and to use the published management information only to understand the latest position.
