Highstreet shops to be protected from aggressive landlords during coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has announced new temporary measures for high street shops and other companies under strain from the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, protecting them from aggressive rent-seeking landlords. Statutory demands and winding up petitions issued to commercial tenants during this time are to be temporarily voided and changes will be made to the Commercial Rent Arrears Recovery on measures already introduced in the Coronavirus Act 2020. In addition, those businesses struggling will be asked to pay only what they can during the pandemic, and landlords are being asked to work collaboratively with these companies.
