Fraudster pleads guilty to using coronavirus (COVID-19) for cyber scam

The Crown Prosecution Service has announced that a coronavirus (COVID-19) text scammer, Abdisalaam Dahir, pleaded guilty to fraud by false misrepresentation for using messages to trick people into providing bank details. The text claimed to be sent by well-known organisations and led victims to fake websites, which required personal financial information. One message supposedly from HMRC targeted those suffering from the pandemic as it offered grants. The potential loss was £185,265.
