European Commission welcomes digital coronavirus (COVID-19) Certificate progress

The European Commission has announced that provisional political agreement has been made between the European Parliament and the European Council regarding the 'EU Digital COVID Certificate' in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The Certificate, previously known as the Digital Green Certificate, is planned to be deployed in June 2021. The Certificate will cover vaccinations, tests and recovery from coronavirus, and will be available in paper and digital format as well as containing a digitally signed QR code. The Commission has said that the Certificate will be available free of charge and may be used by Member States for national purposes. It also added that Member States will have to refrain from imposing travel restriction on people who carry the Certificate. The Commission has also announced it will provide €100m to support Member States in the provision of tests and will also provide support for the deployment of the Certificate.
