EMA and ECDC launch coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine oversight initiative

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has announced that it has teamed up with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to oversee a series of observational studies of the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines throughout the EU and European Economic Area. The EMA will focus on the safety of the vaccines while the ECDC monitors their efficacy, with both organisations being supported by a Joint Advisory Board (JAB) comprising of representatives from the European Commission, the EU/EEA National Immunisation Technical Advisory Groups, members of the EMA COVID-19 pandemic Task Force, and the EMA’s committees on human medicines and medicine safety. The role of the JAB will be to ‘advise on the prioritisation, design, conduct and interpretation of the independent post-authorisation observational studies’.
