CTSI reports telephone scam targeting home workers amid coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has announced that a telephone scam concerning a major internet provider, BT Openreach, has targeted home workers amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The lockdown has increased internet usage in the UK, making home workers more vulnerable. The CTSI reports that the caller requests that the target downloads an application, Teamviewer, enabling a user to gain remote access to a computer which places the target at risk especially if the computer contains personal details.

The Head of the National Trading Standards Scams Team, Louise Baxter, said: ‘All regular landline users are likely to benefit from call blocker technology and we're calling for devices to be made available to people in vulnerable situations to help safeguard them from fraud, scams and financial abuse.’
